Three Different Ways Of Getting A WordPress Blog Up And Running

Three Different Ways Of Getting A WordPress Blog Up And Running

The purpose of this article is to outline three different ways of getting a WordPress blog up and running. WordPress is a free blogging software, has many benefits and is supported by a large community of users and developers.

A “blog” is abbreviated from the term, “web log” which is a form of online diary or journal.

Since its advent a few short years ago, blogs have found numerous uses. Just to name a few, these include:

- teenagers putting their thoughts and ramblings online

- hobbyists giving updates about their interests and passion

- people staying updated with friends overseas

- professional bloggers updating specific niche products

- multinational corporations (MNC’s) such as Microsoft & General Motors using blogs as marketing tool

Like a web site, a blog has global reach. However, it’s far cheaper, quicker and definitely easier to maintain a blog than a traditional web site. A blog’s contents can be easily updated by submitting short or long articles (commonly known as blog posts) through an easy-to-use graphical interface. As a blog’s content is updated regularly, they naturally attract both human readers as well as search engines hungry for fresh content.

To set up a blog, we need some form of blogging software or platform. There are free software like Blogger and WordPress and there are paid platforms like Moveable Type and Typepad.

Blogger is owned by Google. It’s free and perhaps the easiest way to create a blog and your first post, literally within minutes! Howeer, its features are somewhat limited.

Thus, WordPress is a good alternative if you are looking for free blogging software. As it is an open source software, it is literally supported by a huge community of users and developers that assists both new and experienced bloggers. Not only feature rich – it supports categories, pages and trackbacks, just to name a few – it is constantly being updated through its core software as well as through software plugin’s which are bonus software components that extend the basic functionality of WordPress. For more information, visit WordPress.org

Here are 3 different ways to get a WordPress blog up and running:

1) Via WordPress.com

2) Via WordPress.org

3) Via CPANEL’s Fantastico

VIA WORDPRESS.COM

Like Blogger, you can get your WordPress blog and first post up and running within several minutes through WordPress.com! This site is meant for people to get a taste of WordPress without having to go through the somewhat involved procedure via WordPress.org (see the section below). If this is the first time you are getting your WordPress blog up and running, you should definitely give this a shot.

It’s as easy as going to WordPress.com, clicking the button that says “Get a WordPress Blog Now>>” or something like that and following the directions there. And then, you start posting!

In this case, your WordPress blog will be hosted on WordPress.com totally free. Therefore, you do not need your own web host. The only drawback is that there are limitations such as you can’t install your own themes or plugin’s.

VIA WORDPRESS.ORG

Instead of having your blog hosted on WordPress.com, you can install WordPress on your own web host. (Of course, in this case, you need to have your own web hosting account which preferably comes with a version of “CPANEL” – a an easy-to-use graphical control panel to manage your web host.)

Setting up of the WordPress blog comprises the 3 main steps below.

Step 1: Visit WordPress.org and download the WordPress installation files which are free (since it is open source software as mentioned before). As the files are in a compressed format, run your compression utility (such as Winzip) to expand the files to your hard disk..

Step 2: Run your File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program and connect to your web hosting account. Then upload the installation files to the domain (if you have multiple domains hosted) and folder that you want your WordPress blog installed.

Step 3: This step is going to be challenging for the non-techie type if they managed to survive Step 2! You log into the CPANEL of your web host and create and configure your MYSQL database. After this is done, you need to configure some files to complete your installation.

Next, launch your browser to access your blog and start making your 1st post by running the “wp-admin.php” script that has been installed.

As you can see, this is the “normal” but very tedious way of setting up of your WordPress blog.

However, the effort you expend is worthwhile as you can configure all aspects of WordPress like installing the theme you like and adding HTML codes to include Google AdSense on your blog to earn some profit, etc.

VIA FANTASTICO

Again, you install WordPress on your own web host but this time through FANTASTICO. In this case, not only would you need to have your own web hosting account, it MUST come with a version of “CPANEL” that includes “FANTASTICO” – an advanced script installer that automates a 1-click WordPress installation! (Actually a few clicks are needed.)

With FANTASTICO, all the 3 steps above are automated for you. All you need to do is to log into the CPANEL of your web host and then click the FANTASTICO icon, which is a smiley face.

In the next screen, click on “WordPress” and then click on “New Installation”. FANTASTICO will open a form and you fill in a few things like which domain (if you have multiple domains hosted) and which folder to install to. Once you have typed in the information and pushed a button, FANTASTICO will install WordPress in a few seconds!

How is that possible? That’s because the installation files are already at your web host. This saves you time as you don’t have to download them from WordPress.org, expand them and upload to your web host. Likewise, the databas is also automatically created and configured for you.

Next, launch your browser to access your blog and start making your 1st post by running the “wp-admin.php” script that has been installed.

As you can see, this is the “preferred” method of getting a WordPress blog up and running, also within minutes.and yet you can have all the benefits of configuring all aspects of WordPress, such as adding Affiliate Programs easily (including Amazon.com) and Google AdSense to make a handsome profit month after month!

So WordPress could safely be called a blogging platform, in fact a very very universal one, when looks at the growing popularity of WordPress.

Surely you must be trying to earn an income online. If not, then I wonder why. Because nowadays, most people can blog and earn money from their blogs. Provided they know how to take full advantage of the blogging features available.

And thatâ??s where comes in the power of Wealthy WordPress.

Over the years, WordPress has evolved and there has been an introduction of a lot of themes, plugins and widgets and wordpress blog themes free.

It is these very additions that have made WordPress extremely popular with bloggers.
But knowing that something is there is just not good enough, unfortunately. You have to be able to know how to use it and where to use it.

That combined with the power of affiliate marketing; make WordPress indeed a strong force to reckon with on the World Wide Web.

What if you could now have the combined power of how to use wordpress and the ability to know how to make money online?

How to Detect and Prevent a WordPress Spam Injection Attack

How to Detect and Prevent a WordPress Spam Injection Attack

Last month my WordPress blog was the victim of a spam injection attack. I am the art director for a highly rated graphic design and website design company. I have years of experience in website design, WordPress Blog Design and I am security minded in my approach to web development — I was still a victim of clever hacking. It can happen to anyone and it is happening at an increasingly alarming rate. The worst part about this experience was that not only my WordPress blog was attacked – my entire corporate website was removed from Google SERPS. We were ranked in the Google Top 10 for several coveted spots such as; graphic design company, packaging design companies, brand identity company, and many more. Our site was completely out of Google search results for two weeks in which time we lost countless leads. This experience absolutely sickened me! It also created way too many hours of work dedicated to repairing the hackers damage and recovering our website’s Google Rankings. During my research into fixing the spam injection hackers damage I discovered that this is a widespread problem with WordPress blogs. It’s happening to thousands of people and it is not limited to people using older versions of WordPress.

Recovering from a WordPress Spam Injection attack is not fun, but you can regain your Google Search Results after being hacked by a spam injection attack. If you’ve been compromised, hopefully you have your website and WordPress blog backed up. It can be a pretty tedious process to go through every file and folder on your server locating and deleting spam files. I recommend backing up your WordPress posts and completely removing all files and databases from your server. Then do a complete fresh upload of your website and a complete reinstall of WordPress.

If you have already been removed from Google Search Results then you will want to notify Google immediately of what has happened. The best policy with Google is to be specific in your explanations. You will need to make sure that you have removed all bad files from your server and then contact Google again explaining what actions you have taken to resolve the situation and submit your “request for reconsideration”. In most cases where a valid site has been hacked Google will restore their sites rankings within two weeks. However, don’t expect any notifications from Google on their progress of reevaluating your website or WordPress blog. I am writing this article in hopes that it will help anyone from having to go through that processs.

What should you look for if you suspect a WordPress Spam Injection Attack?
The first thing you should look for is a list of spammy keywords showing up in your list of keywords located in your Google Webmasters Tools. If you aren’t using Google Webmaster Tools then you should definitely look into this. When your site starts showing up in weird looking search results, which can also be seen in Google Webmaster Tools under search results for your site, you need to act fast because at this point Google will act fast to remove your site from SERPS in order to protect others who may be at risk from visiting your website.

The key to detection is awareness. Be vigilant in monitoring your website and your website’s stats. Spam injections are a clever, effective form of hacking and show no outward signs of infection. However, If you do a Google Site Search for spammy key words like; {site:yoursite.com spamword} you will be able to see if your site is referencing spam keywords. You will not be able to see spam showing up on your site. In order to physically see spam tags in your site you must go to the “cached” version of your web pages and view them in “text mode”. If you’ve been infected you will now be able to see spam keywords, usually appearing as a footer.

What does a Spam Injection Do?
Spam Injection software hides spam keyword links in code that is usually encoded with a PHP function that effectively scrambles html to be decoded once safely embedded on your server, database, etc. You won’t see these files decoded, but the Google Bot and other bots will when crawling your site! Once the Bots access the code the spam injection software has done it’s work, effectively stealing your search index to improve their own pagerank.

These spam injection hacks are very hard to detect software injections inserted into your site, usually on a database level, via templates or plugins. This is part of the reason WordPress is such a target for these attacks. Plugins are what make WordPress so dynamic and cool, but they are an open doorway for spam injection software. For obvious reasons we should all focus our attention on prevention so that you don’t have to deal with detection.

What can I do to prevent a WordPress Spam Injection Attack?
I’ll start with the simplest things you can do to protect your WordPress blog or site from spam attacks first. . .

First:  Update WordPress
Updating WordPress is the easiest thing to do, so why not do it? I usually wait a short period of time after a new release to make sure the bug fixes have been worked out. Please be aware that simply updating WordPress is NOT enough!

Second: Pick a good password
Pick a good password. Don’t use the same password on every site. If you’re really diligent  you can also change your password regularly.

Third: Change the admin user name
The default WordPress user name is “admin”. This is just a guess, but I suspect that the majority of people never change this. Don’t give any information away. Hackers are clever, but like burglars they would rather move on to the easy score. You can change your admin by creating a new user and then deleting the admin user. You’ll be given the option to migrate posts to another user.

Fourth: Hide your WordPress Version Number
David Kierznowski of blogsecurity.net lately released a simple plugin to hide your wordpress installation version number.
The no version plugin is a simple plugin that will replace the version number with blanks, so anyone doing a view “page source” from the browser on your site will not be able to see your wordpress version.

Fifth: Protect your plugins
Plugins are the easy gateway way for hackers to access your blog. All WordPress files begin with (wp-) by default so, hackers can quickly discover which plugins you’re using by going to /wp-content/plugins/, if you haven’t renamed your database files. A quick remedy to block  a blank index.html file in the wp-content/plugins/ folder.

More Complex Procedures:

First: Protecting your WP-Config file.
This file contains your database name, database username and database password. Obviously, you don’t want anyone to have access to something this valuable. If you don’t feel comfortable making changes to your config you may want to contact your hosting company for help otherwise you can add the following code to your .htaccess file:

PHP:
1. # protect wpconfig.php
2. <files wp-config.php>
3. order allow,deny
4. deny from all
5. </files>

Second: Change your database names
Note: do not attempt this unless you are comfortable with PHPMyAdmin and making changes to MySQL. If you are not comfortable with this you should hire a professional to assist you.

Begin by backing up your database!

Many people have problems with the database table name prefix changing functionality of WP Security Scan. You can manually change your database names following the instructions below.

1. BACKUP your WordPress database to a sql file – you can do this in “phpmyadmin”.
2. You should Deactivate your plugins as a precaution before proceeding. You can reactivate them after you have finished.
3. Make a copy of the .sql file you created, then you can open the .sql file and use a text editor to find and replace all “wp_” prefix to “rename_”.
4. Now, drop all tables of your WordPress databases, but DO NOT drop the database.
5. import the (.sql) file that you have just edited into your wordpress databases.
6. Finish by editing your wp-config.php file and change the $table_prefix = ‘wp_’; to $table_prefix = ’something_’;

I hope that this article will help someone avoid the fallout associated with a spam injection hack. I love the functionality of WordPress, but unfortunately, this experience has left me so cautious that my company no longer uses a WordPress Blog along with our corporate website. Maybe someday.

I am the art director for a highly rated Website Design Company, graphic design and packaging company. I have many years of experience in website design, WordPress Blog Design and I am security minded in my approach to web development. I truly believe that one of the greatest assets a company can have today is a well designed website combining good looks with intuitive navigation and easy to use functionality topped off with the right amount of search engine optimization and marketing.

Top 5 Reasons To Use WordPress For Your Blog

Top 5 Reasons To Use WordPress For Your Blog

If you’re anything like me, when I first set up my blog about a year ago, I had NO CLUE where to start.  Should I use Blogger, Blog spot, WordPress, or any of the 100′s of other blog platforms that are out there?

I assumed a blog was just a blog.  Boy, did I learn otherwise!

After a lot of research, recommendations, and help from others (that’s the “Network” part of network marketing) I realized that I better go with installing WordPress for my blog.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with WordPress, it’s a blog platform that gives you a pre-built blog site for free.  But if you REALLY want to boost up your blog marketing – you really need to get a self-hosted WordPress blog and your own personal domain.  And I’m going to go into more details why here in the list.

As any smart marketer realizes – leave the hard stuff to the professionals.  So that is why I outsourced my blog set-up (which included the graphics, RSS feeds, theme, and connection to all of my social networking sites) to THE professional blog set-up guru I know – Ms. Shannon Shubert at IM Group Marketing.

I also self-hosted my site – and again, to another professional who knows a ton more information about self-hosting and is THE ONLY person I would trust with hosting my blog – Holly Powell at Nonstop Social Media.

If you stop by their sites, tell them I sent you!

Here are my Top 5 Reasons to Use WordPress for your blog:

1. Google Loves WordPress – If you’re using a blog for your marketing strategies, you’re probably interested in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – at least a little bit.  If you’re into SEO, then you want and need Google giving your site “some love.”  Now, I could go on and on and on and on and ON about SEO, but the idea is that you want Google ranking your site higher than your competition for any given keyword.  Well, for whatever reason, Google loves WordPress.  Period.  Game, set, match!  You need a WordPress blog if you are in SEO strategies.

Yes, you can use other blog sites and still get good ranking, but you typically have to work harder to get the same amount of “love” from Google as your competition.  If you already have a different blog and are so far into it that it would hurt you more than help you, just stick with it and MAKE IT WORK.  But AT LEAST have it self-hosted – which leads me into my next point.

2. Self hosted – I have this in my top 5 reasons, well, for a good reason.  (Oh man I’m witty!)  You can use the free version of wordpress and have no problems and make that work for you just fine.  But you could run into a few problems, the biggest of which is that your blog could be here one day, and gone the next.  If you have a self hosted WordPress blog, no one can touch it.  It’s yours.  Yes, you’re paying a small monthly hosting fee (usually around .00 or less) but it’s WELL worth its value considering the thought that you might lose your blog otherwise.

On top of having your blog self hosted – I would also recommend getting a domain name that is specific to you.  Mine is obviously www.LinusRuzicka.com.  It looks a lot more professional that the generic site URL that WordPress gives your site.  Having your domain forwarded is essential for branding YOU in this industry.

3. WordPress Design Themes – Now , do you want the generic WordPress Theme that comes with WordPress, or a custom designed one that is specific only to you?  The default WordPress theme is perfect if you’re just setting up a blog to have a blog.  BUT, since you’re in this industry to make money and brand you, I suggest a designed custom theme. There are tons of people who design custom WordPress Themes that you can easily upload to your domain, to change the appearance and feel of your WordPress website. Some of the WP Themes are paid versions, but most of them are free.

There are more than 1000 themes loaded directly into the WordPress theme website, from which you can choose, although you are not limited to just the themes loaded into the WordPress website.  Since I outsourced the design and feel of my blog, my designer and I talked bakc and forth for a week or so to grind out the details of what I wanted.  The theme I chose is very SEO friendly (“Monezine” theme), but there are many other to choose from such as “Flexibility” or “Thesis”

4. Plug-ins – This is my favorite.  Plugins are what soups-up your blog and converts it from a 1992 Ford Taurus, into a 2010 Chevy Camaro.  The right plug-in can save you time, make you money, and make your job a WHOLE lot easier.  In fact, I think I’ll make my next post on specific plug-ins just so you can see some of the money making ones you NEED to have on your blog (So make sure to Sign-up to get my blog updates via e-mail so you can get the next one).

Just like with the WordPress Themes, if there is a specific function you want your blog to perform, there are programmers out there who have created WordPress Plugins that will make your job A LOT easier. There are 1000′s of WordPress Plugins on the WordPress.org website (wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ ), which are free and an ever growing amount that are not in the WordPress database.  You just have to go looking for them.

When you find a Plugin you want, just click “Install” on that specific plugin page, and it will automatically download, unzip, and upload it to the right Plugin directory on your blog. After it finished its upload, simply go to the backoffice area of your blog to “activate” the plugin.

5.  WordPress functionality – Now, I don’t want to lose you here on this one, so I’ll keep it simple.  WordPress is an HTML based blog platform.  The reason I love that is that it allows you to do SOOOOOOO much more to your blog.  Whan you’re creating a post – you have the ability to add videos, pics, graphics, links, and audio all in HTML format.  The cool thing is, when you create posts, you can create them in a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) design – meaning that what you see on the screen is what your readers will see.  Or you can do HTML formating – all with a click of the mouse and flip-flop back and forth.

To Double check and see what your content will look like, you can “Preview” it and see it in real time on your designed blog to double check and make sure it looks the way you want it to.

So there you have it, the Top 5 Reasons To Use WordPress For Your Blog, but that’s not the end of it yet.  To get more Free blog marketing strategies and find out how you can get more network marketing tips delivered straight to your inbox visit the Linus Ruzicka Marketing Nerve Center.

An Introduction To WordPress As A CMS

An Introduction To WordPress As A CMS

One of the most exciting features about wordpress is the fact that you can customise it to meet your needs. There are literally thousands of free designs available on the internet, and if this doesn’t suit you there is a whole heap more available for purchase. WordPress also has a great feature which allows you to install plug-ins. These plug-ins are small pieces of programming that change how wordpress works, in some way. For example you may have a plug-in which automatically deletes spam (undesirable) comments left on your site, or even one which automatically places advertisements in each page you create. The possibilities really are endless when it comes to customising wordpress to suit your needs.

The first thing you need to do to get wordpress running is to download the latest version, this is available on the wordpress.org web site. You will end up with a .zip file which is around 3mb in size.

Although the wordpress installation is a very simple process, it is recommended that you possess the following skills to make it easier.

A server with PHP and MySQL (required!)
The basics of MySQL database management (creation, backup, etc.)
Basic knowledge of how HTML/CSS and PHP work.

For this guide I am installing wordpress on my local apache server, although the steps are exactly the same for those of you using a Linux hosting environment with cPanel.

Step One: Upload the wordpress install zip to your root directory, you can also use a sub directory if this is where you want the wordpress site to be located (for example blog.yoursite.com).

Step Two: Unzip/decompress the wordpress zip file, a folder named ‘wordpress’ will appear. It is in here where the main files for wordpress are located. Open the wordpress folder and move the files from ‘public_html/wordpress’ to ‘public_html’ if you want the wordpress install at the root of your site, otherwise you can leave them in the folder and the wordpress site will be located at ‘yoursite.com/wordpress’. Please note you can change the name of this folder as it will appear in your URL.

Step Three: You will need to create a database and user for this wordpress installation and assign privileges to the user. This can be done through cPanel easily, make sure you remember the password and other details as you will need these soon.

Step Four: Navigate in your web browser to the location of the wordpress files, this may be ‘yoursite.com’ or ‘yoursite.com/wordpress’. You will be asked to create a configuration file, click the button and one should be created for you.

Step Five: A screen will tell you that wordpress requires your database information; click next and there is another page where you enter this information. Database host is almost always localhost and you can use any table prefix if you only have one database for multiple systems. The rest of the information you should know from creating your databases in step three. If you enter the information correctly you will be asked to run the install, click the button now.

Step Six: Once the install is complete you get to enter some basic information on your wordpress site. Choose a site name and enter your email and a secure password for your admin account. Ensure the password is strong as people will often try and hack the admin accounts for wordpress sites. You can now log into your wordpress site and will be greeted by the sleek dashboard. Your base installation is now complete.

The first thing you will want to do once your installation is complete is to write your first post. On the left hand side of the page is the administration menu. Click on the item named ‘posts’ you are now taken to a list of active posts, and will see a test post. It is a good idea to delete this post as it is only there for testing purposes, hover over the ‘Hello World!’ post and you will see red text saying trash, click this and the post is deleted.

On the admin menu you will notice the posts item now has sub items (or items below it), these are specific options to do with the posts, and each main item on the menu will have sub items like this. You can show and hide them at any time by hovering over the main menu item and clicking the arrow to the right. Click on the ‘add new post button’ and we will write the first post for your site. Choose a title for your post then go to the next larger box and begin writing it, you may like to take this time to familiarise yourself with the features available inside the post box. Once you have written your post you need to choose a category, these categories are used to sort the posts on your web site. On the right hand site, click on the ‘add new category text’ and create a new category. You can manage these categories on their page which can be accessed under the Posts menu item. Click the ‘blue publish button’ on the right hand side of your page and the post is now published to your web site, wasn’t that easy!

Other important aspects of wordpress sites are pages. These are more static than posts and appear separately. Common uses for pages are for contact forms, about us pages, whereas posts are used for actual content. Click on the pages menu item to the left, then on ‘add new’, we are going to create an about us page. Enter the title of the page ‘about’ or ‘about us’ will work, then go about adding the content. Once you are happy with what you have written you can publish the page.

Adding a new theme to wordpress is a very simple process and it can help your site look more appealing to visitors. On the wordpress.org site there is an ‘extend’ category for themes, it is here that you will choose a look for your site. Once you have found a theme that you like, you can download it (which consists of a zip file). You will now upload this to your themes directory, this is located in the ‘wp-content/themes’ folder of your wordpress site. Once it is uploaded you will need to unzip/decompress it. Go back to your wordpress dashboard (admin menu) and click on appearance, now choose the Themes option. This page will list all of the themes you have in your directory, find the one you have just uploaded and select ‘activate’. Congratulations, it only took several clicks of the mouse but your site now has a whole new design.

Plug-ins are just as simple as themes to get working in your blog. You can look through the plug-ins section at wordpress.org to find any that interest you. Once you find one that you want on your wordpress site, download it (again a zip file, are you surprised?), but this time upload it to ‘wp-content/plugins’ and unzip/decompress. Click on the plugins menu item on the wordpress administration menu and your plug-in should be listed here, click on activate and the plug-in will begin working on your site. At this time the specific plug-in may require custom settings, you will get a popup notice if this is the case.

In this guide we only covered the basics on wordpress and the features any new site administrator is likely to use. There is so much more to wordpress and trying to write about every little feature would result in a massive book! We recommend that you take a look through all of the options of the administration menu, just so you can get an understanding of anything. If there is something that you would like to change it can likely be done easy using this menu. If you have any further queries, the wordpress.org site has a whole wiki dedicated to helping you solve your problems. We hope you found this guide useful and decide to go with wordpress; the power it offers web masters really is unmatchable by any other CMS. Good luck with your web site, and remember to make backups often, you never know when you will need them.

How to Make Money with WordPress

How to Make Money with WordPress

WordPress is probably the number one free blogging platform in today’s society. Thus thousands of bloggers around the world use WordPress to power their blogs (including me). But how can WordPress, a FREE blogging platform, earn you some significant income? Here is a step-by-step guide showing how to make money with WordPress.

1.) Select a Niche

The absolute MOST IMPORTANT element of a website/blog is the niche. Choose a specific and unique niche you feel comfortable writing about. For example, if you’re really good at web design, write about a specific part of web design such as coding. Make sure that your niche isn’t vague, because then search engines like Google and Yahoo! will NEVER find your website/blog.

Once you’ve chosen your niche, brainstorm some articles you can write. This will help in the long run; trust me, you don’t want to start a blog and half a year down the road you have a sever brain fart and can’t write any more articles. Make sure your niche is specific but broad enough so you can write at least 2,000 articles on it!

2.) Create Your WordPress Blog

You need to create a WordPress blog. WordPress is a free blogging platform, but you will need a website first, and the website needs to be hosted one of two ways: Free Hosting or Paid Hosting.

Free Hosting

If you’re looking for a free hosting service to host WordPress, the best solution for you would probably be WordPress.com hosting. I recommend this option because it is 100% free and from WordPress itself! The WordPress platform automatically comes with the free web hosting service from WordPress.com (as the name suggests) and you won’t have to worry about all the complications of web hosting (name servers, updates, mysql databases, etc.)! Plus, setup is a breeze and you get to choose your own domain (has to be a subdomain of WordPress.com though). Trust me, free WordPress hosting doesn’t getting any better than WordPress.com!

Another option would be finding free web hosting services and installing WordPress manually. This is not recommended because it takes a lot of hassle finding a 100% free web hosting service with a good up-time and support for WordPress. I would definitely recommend WordPress.com hosting over free web hosting.

The last and worst (in my point of view) option for free WordPress hosting is self-hosting your website. This is the MOST complicated process as you have to port forward according to your router, install a self-hosting service such as WAMP, and get a free domain from No-Ip.org (subdomain of course). The worst part about it is that your website will have absolutely NO bandwith due to the fact that you yourself are hosting your website. I’m not even going to go in-depth with this; you can google how to self-host WordPress because I will not waste my time explaining my least recommended method of free web hosting.

Paid Hosting

Paid Hosting allows you to have complete control over your WordPress blog (you can write whatever you want; with WordPress.com hosting you have to abide by their terms of service). Bloggers often use this to their advantage, as creating beautiful-looking templates and site design is a breeze with paid hosting. First, you’ll need to find a good web hosting service. I recommend HostGator because (in my humble opinion) they are cheap yet offer the best support and compatibility for WordPress. With HostGator, simply sign up (you get a free domain with any plan) and in your control panel you can 1-click install WordPress! Once you’ve installed WordPress, you’ll be good to go!

HostGator is definitely not the only option for WordPress hosting. Other top-notch web hosting services can be found on the web.

3.) Get a Theme, Configure WordPress Widgets, and Start Writing Stuff!

Once you’ve set up WordPress, I recommend selecting a theme. You can find themes on WordPress’s site. They have a large variety of themes, and you can decide on which one suits your blog the best.

The second step after installing WordPress is installing widgets. Widgets are special components of your WordPress blog that each have a specific function.

In my opinion, SEO, Backup, Cache, and anti-Spam are the widgets you absolutely need. Other fancy widgets are up to your discretion.

After installing the widgets (you can decide which ones you need and which ones you don’t), get ready to write! Remember step one? Hopefully you can already spit out a couple of blog posts from your brainstorming!

4.) Receive Traffic

As a webmaster, I really can’t emphasize the importance of traffic. You may have the BEST article on the planet, but if your blog’s only loyal visitor is your mom, the world won’t be able to see your beautiful writing. That’s why traffic is essential to your blog’s survival.

To start out, I immediately recommend you use this submission service to start getting “known”. As a little precaution, I urge you to not focus on submitting your site to too many search engines, because most of the time search engines should find your website automatically.

Generating some beginning traffic is pretty easy, given that you have friends and family. Use FaceBook, Twitter, and whatever other methods to let everyone know about your website. Assuming that you know more than 50 people in the world, this should be pretty easy and you should begin to have some steady traffic. Not much, but steady.

Now it’s time to go public. One of the most effective ways to get traffic is to submit your website to the top directories such as DMoz (Google). However, since you’re just starting out, I don’t recommend this because DMoz literally accepts less than 1% of all submissions, and your site will probably be the 99% that gets denied. Submit your website to lesser known but trusted directories that guarantee indexing.

Once you’ve submitted your website to at least 10 directories, let’s move on to some more ways to earn traffic. Traffic-exchange sites are good as longs as they are MANUAL. NEVER join an auto-surf exchange site, as the traffic has no value since everything is automated.

Yet another free and effective method to get traffic is through free classified ads. Just google “free classifieds” and you’ll find a load of websites that allow you to post advertisements for free. This is effective as it is not time-consuming, and thousands of top-ranked sites will be displaying your ads for absolutely no fee!

There are millions of other ways to get traffic to your blog. In fact, I’m adding a separate category in my blog (Big Bux Blog) dedicated to educate people on how to drive traffic to their website or blog. For now, we’ll move on to why you’ve been reading this article: making money.

5.) Monetize Your WordPress Blog

So far, you should have a blog that:

has a unique niche
has at least 10+ articles/posts
is hosted by a trusted web hosting service
has the WordPress blogging platform (duh!)
has decent traffic (500+ visitors a day)
can be found on search engines such as Google

Now it’s time to reap your rewards for your painstakingly hard work! It’s time to make some money $$$!

The most effective and easiest way to earn a steady income is through advertising. There are many paths you can take. The most famous advertising service is probably Google Adsense. However, they pay ONLY by check, and that may be inconvenient if you wish to be paid by other means such as PayPal. That’s why there are loads of Adsense alternatives!

Clicksor

Clicksor is probably the main competition to Adsense. You can be paid in a variety of different ways, which makes Clicksor much more convenient than Adsense. Clicksor offers pretty much every type of advertising you’ll ever need for your blog; it’s an all-in-one solution for monetizing your blog.

One major problem with Clicksor and other all-in-one advertising solutions is that the advertising is HORRIBLE for blogs. In fact, some blogs lose traffic due to advertisements filling up more than 60% of your blog and annoying the hell out of the visitors. You can either take the risk of losing some traffic and making your website ugly, OR you can use an alternative monetizing method: In-Text advertising.

InfoLinks

InfoLinks is hands-down THE BEST in-text advertising. In-text advertising is effective because of its limited disturbance in your blog; it chooses random key words in your blog and highlights them, allowing visitors to click them, in turn generating income for the webmaster (in this case YOU). How can in-text advertising services afford to offer this type of advertising? Advertisers pay sites like InfoLinks to promote their products/services. InfoLinks hands that responsibility to webmasters like you and me, and we get paid in return for helping InfoLinks earn money. I hope I haven’t confused you. In the simplest terms, you get paid for showing links on your blog!

Now, how do we integrate such a great service into our blog? InfoLinks has generously created a WordPress widget that you can simply install into your site.

Follow the simple 1-minute integration guide and you should have in-text advertisements integrated into your blog in no time!

InfoLinks has a relatively high payout per click (PPC); on average, each click is .10. Let’s say you have 500 visitors per day, and 10% (50 people) each click one in-text advertisement per day. That gives you .00 a day, which translates to over ,500 a year doing absolutely nothing! And that is only a mere 10% of your daily visitors! You could be earning some serious income with InfoLinks.

Regarding payment methods, InfoLinks pays by either PayPal or Check. Pretty convenient for me.

Other Monetizing Methods

There are hundreds of ways to monetize your blog, and InfoLinks is just one of them. Another 100% free method is affiliate marketing. I’m not going to go in-depth for this because I’ll also create a separate category dedicated to affiliate marketing in my blog. Basically, major companies such as Microsoft pay you when you help them make a sale. Every time you refer a friend to Microsoft’s website and they make a purchase (i.e. Windows 7), you earn a certain percentage of the total sales (usually this is around 10-15%) from Microsoft. Considering the amount of traffic you already have, this can be a huge money maker. Try this method out, as it is 100% free too!

Many money-making solutions now offer WordPress widgets too, and you can monetize your blog to whatever extent you please. Just keep in mind that you don’t want more than 20% of your blog to be advertisements =P

6.) Have Fun Earning Some Free Money with your WordPress Blog!

Once you have accomplished all or most of the above, you have succeeded in creating a monetized WordPress blog earning you around 00-3000 a year. Remember that more writing = more visitors = more traffic = more ad-clicking machines = more $$$$$$$$!

A very important note is that a monetized blog should not be your main source of income. However, making 00+ a year is extremely good considering the fact that your visitors do all the work!
